my parents have a 2001 honda odyssey. my mom claims that when the TCS comes on from a start, that there is a clunking noise. i havent had a chance to check it out for her yet, just thought id get some ideas first. since all the TCS does is apply brake to spinning wheel. i would think it is just a proportioning solenoid that controls it. so other than that i cant think of what else might be wrong.

i always thought that traction conrol was regulation the power to the wheels when slippage is detected?

ill have to recheck, but im prety sure the owners manual said it applies brake to slipping wheel. plus when i drove the thing, thats what it feels like. as soon as the TCS kicks in, u can feel the van pull hard to one side. so im prety sure its brake.

The TCS and the ABS unit are actually 1. TCS is actually ABS modified to detect slipping under both braking and accelerating conditions.
When braking, the pedal input you apply is sent into a control unit which senses the pressure that is applied. This information is then transferd to the wheels, in which time, the sensors at the wheels look for lock-up. If lock-up is detected, the computer modifies your input to correct your pressure to prevent it.
Under acceleration, your throttle input is also sent to this unit. If your input is to great when accelerating on a slippery surface from a stand still, the computer will apply brake and modify your throttle input to help you get moving. If your at crusing speed on a slick surface and the wheels detect spin, the unit will control just your throttle input to get the drive wheels back under control. Obviously, under this condition it would never apply the brake as it would put you in a sticky situation.
That "clunk" and grinding you hear is absolutely normal and is a way of telling you that the wheels are slipping and you should modfiy your throttle input and use caution. I don't know if Honda has it but, on my Lexus when the wheels begin to slip I get that "clunk" and grinding noise along with a light on the dash that flashes slippery conditions (a car with 2 squiggly lines behind it).
OK lesson is over, class dismissed <img src="http://www.clubhonda.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="Big Grin" width="15" height="15"><!--graemlin::D-->
