View Full Version : Scoobie the WRX vs. the GTI...

CSmooth999

Coming home last week I pass a black GTI at like 75mph... not looking for trouble... just cruising...(FYI I now have a full exhaust and have been itching to try it out, sounds wonderful BTW)

I look to my right and the guy caught up and wants to race... we draw back to like 35 mph.... (in a 65) he drops into gear so I drop it into 2nd and pass him then toast him all through 2nd and 3rd... and into 4th I let off at 90mph (one speeding ticket is enough for me...)

He flies by then slows down again... he wants to go again!! ((OkAy.. my kinda man, lol!)) but this time the windows are open and the guy sitting in the passenger seat has a camcorder... He gives me a nod, and we start drawing back....

HAHA!!! I'm laughing hysterically at this point!! I'm thinking he wants his OWN slaughter on video??!!! No prob... I don't know what this guy was thinking.. but I toasted him AGAIN... and laid off at 100mph... when he finally could pass me. He slowed down and with the window open screams, "Will you marry me?" lmao!!!

Damn, I didn't think it was THAT easy!! J/K It's nice to know that some guys appreciate my effort.

Anywho, my exit came up and that was it... still don't know who those guys were but I'm sure I'll be seeing them again... ha ha!!

TurboXS turbo-back... I'm waiting on the pics... I should have them later...

Thanks Rotary... and I am sorry for assuming you were slow.. but when someone tells me they're faster than a 355F1 I have good reason to question it, since I worked for years on those types of cars.

Hopefully we can chat again sometime about your ride.. I'm seriously interested in it!! You don't have to believe me.. but, I don't lie.

thats what happens when turbo cars get a straightpipe. I'd like to run one on mine however I'd like to do overall reliability before doing any other performance. However it would result in massive flame shooting and unfortunately insane boost creep because the stock wastegate sucks. But I've got a few ideas about how to fix that other than machining the wastegate.

Chris I am down, again, done with the flaming.

HAHA, you can shoot flames out your exhaust?!! That's awesome!!! I want to see that!!

Yes, my goal is to improve my 1/4 mile time by a whole second. I think it's doable, and here's my reasoning..

#1 A The exhaust alone w/ the hi-flo contributes to about a +26HP/24lbs/tqe ... so I'm at what? 255BHP? Straight-pipe at the track should give a little more.

Hopefully by spring I'll have a boost controller... 18psi vs. the 14.7 max I'm running now, would be VERY nice. I realize 3psi won't change too much, anyone know what to expect?

May get a bottle by summer, we'll see though.. just enough to get the turbo spooling..

#2 I've had a more time to learn how to launch. LOL, hey practice helps!!! One thing I've learned is that launching is EVERYTHING in that car! AWD is funky though...

Learning how to drive a 5-speed was tough enough... but TURBO AWD as well??! You can only imagine the trouble I was having. (Especially having no one to teach it to me. It was all trial and error...more error, like that curb! lol, oops!!)

The WRX is a very strange car to drive. Unlike anything else out there I've driven. The clutch is awkward (tight for a stock clutch) and the point for a perfect launch is very difficult to find consistantly (at least for me). Bog, Burn, or LAUNCH! Hey, I'm, learning..

I think I can do it. Be sure to check out my new exhaust pics under member rides! See ya!

ROTARYFDTT

true I've never really gotten to drive AWD yet. I really would lOVE to experiment with it. Been out with my one friend who is exceptional with AWD (has Stealth TT now modded AWD 98 turbo Talon) doing some axis spins, drifting, and launching while cruising. Lining up with a brand new TA, Talon on one side, Stealth TT on the other side of the TA. Oh man that was tight, we both ripped it out of the hole. TA didn't even try to launch with us. Its so much fun. Although side note, I wouldn't underestimate LS1s, they run low 13s stock and run 12.8s with just exhaust. And it is true, there is more than goes into launching AWD than most know.

and about shooting flames, unfortunately I don't as of now because I still have my main cat. on. But with a midpipe I would. Maybe/hopefully this summer I will get one on this summer if I get the money to do the other things i want to get done first.

You dont need turbo to shoot flames, you should know this your the biggest flammer here!! ROFL! J/K Bro, i know were straight but i just had too!!

But to prove my point no, turbo makes no difference wether you can shoot flames or not

just commenting on the awd talon, wheather or not they are faster than fwd talons. this has been heavily debated and came to the conclusion that it just depends on the driver.

I dissagree with this.
When modded/maxing out the cars potential, the other AWD cars are severly limited by weight. This being shown in the 3000GT VR4/Stealth TT because the fasted ones in the United States can't do better than low 11s high 10s and trap low for those times. And there are very few hitting those numbers. The WRX isn't hindered by the weight of AWD but hasn't been shown to put down fast numbers like above(at least to my knowledge) and the numbers of those running times like that are few. The DSMs have AWD and don't weight much at all like the WRXs. Both are nearly identical in weight. However the DSMs have the largest tuner market out of the group and post much faster times. There are a LOT more DSMs running 10s and lower than the 3Si cars/WRXs running low 11s and high 10s.

however, in street launch applications AWD cars with similar 1/4 times roughly between the 1 second zone(13.0-14.0 as example). A good launch by both will render the same times up through a couple gears. Then the faster car will pull.

this was written usuing the top AWD cars in the United States. The Skyline wasn't included in the US market, and was only produced in Japan (yes I am aware you can import them at a high cost, around 90K for a R34 GTR V-spec, but it was never sold overhere by Nissan) This car, however is the ultimate AWD sports car available the world.

oh sorry dude I misread. I believe that Mitsu actually didn't state the correct times the cars ran saying they were faster than what they really are. As for Talons, my friends 2g AWD tsi are rated at a 14.9 or a little higher stock I believe. (that is with a good launch though)

I heard serious rumors about Mitsu stating the times for the GS-Ts and GSXs were faster than what they really were. I don't think the Talons/Eclipses were in the 14s. They are a low 15 sec. car and a HIGH 14 second with a good AWD launch.
