View Full Version : Sequential Shifting VS Formula 1

For those of you who follow posts I said I would get back to everyone with this:
I'm not sure if this information is 100% accurate, so please correct me if you see something:
For a while I couldn't technically differentiate between sequential shifting (like Prodrive makes for the WRX in a 6-speed) and Formula 1 like the 355F1 uses. Both serve the same function, to up/downshift at the push of a button (or hit of a paddle) depending on what you're driving.
Today I was at my friends place and I asked him to explain how a trani works.. since he happened to have one laying around. I asked him 100 questions and this is what I have concluded:
Both sequential shifters and Formula 1 use a manual transmission. On the underside of a Ferrari 355F1, you'd see what looks like a clutch with a huge computer box around it. The clutch is not in the cockpit, it is completely computer-controlled.
While Formula 1 completely eliminates a person having to use a clutch to start and stop the car, sequential shifters require the use of the clutch from the cockpit to put it into first gear and to stop. Once the car is in gear, both Formula 1 and sequential shifters work the same way:
To upshift or downshift from the cockpit there are typically buttons on the steering wheel, or paddles behind it. Either way, when this switch is activated two major events occur within the engine:
1. The fuel or ignition is cut from engine (EFI only) for a split second allowing the engine to unload. And at the same time it:
2. It sends an electronic signal to solinoids on either side of the shifting drum which will push or pull the trani into the next gear.
And viola there you have it, the beauty of sequential shifting... :D

there nice cars but if i had the money for one id get somthing else, theve become more of a status symbol than a performance car...ferari's starting to lag behind the other supercars and for the price tag id rather have a porsche...but hey thats just me, and im sure if i ever see one on the street ill drool all over it just the same ;)

Driving stick is a blast and I 100% agree that being a purist is NOT a bad thing!! If you can't drive stick, or understand the concept, I totally agree that you should not be driving anything F1. Of course I was driving F1 before I learned to use a clutch, but I had the basic concept of a 6-speed trani and how it worked.. but that was a BIKE trani.. anywho..
Upon researching the sequential shifting package for the WRX I realized that the 6-speed trani offered would be more effective with the powerband, offering an extra gear between 4500/6000 RPMS at 120 MPH which would be helpful, in my case.
And when drag racing those precious 1/4 seconds that it takes to shift the car by depressing the clutch could work against you. NOTHING shifts more perfectly than a computer...
I have taken quite a liking to my 5-speed MT. In fact I've become quite comfortable in 2nd gear literally sliding thru turns .. AWD is AMAZING.
My car is the mini-me of a Porsche +1998 911T, same engine set-up just smaller, and less powerful. But same idea...
The 1997 911TT is my fav. Last of the 'real' Porsches some will tell you because Porsche starting liquid-cooling their engines in 1998...
While the WRX is more closely compared to the Porsche 944 engine by respective HP/TQE and gear ratios, the 944 is an inline-4 and the WRX is a TC'ed flat-4 like the 911's flat-6..
Porsche/Subaru.. who would have thought?!! I'm not afraid to take my baby off-roading... :D I wouldn't think of going near dirt w/ a 911... lol.

well said, and i can certanly see the advadages of this in F1...and drag racing well of course!, automatic shifters have been around since the 60's in that sport, unless you powershift(ie going through gears with your foot on the gas and not using the clutch) a manal isnt really ideal for draging...so yeah

<sigh> okay, i'm going to address each of these statments one at a time....
first:you say later that that type of shfter has been around since the 60's in "real" sports cars (drag racing is a sport in which cars are used, hence a sports car) so if you own a "real sports car with a sequential shifter, are you still just trendy?
second:ferraris have ALWAYS been status symbols you dolt. there is nothing that compares to a ferrari. they are truely a stand alone company. for the money, there are pleanty of things you can buy but none of them are a Ferrari. it's more than a name. do some homework.
third: and i'm sorry chris, i really like you, but i feel i must correct you. your car is in fact very little like the 911. 1998"T" or otherwise. for one very important reason: the 911 is (and i know you know this) rear engine, where as your's is a front mounted engine. this changes the hanling dynamics of the car dramaticly. in fact the only similarities i can find between the two are the engine layout (the flat configuration w/ turbo) and the drive layout (AWD) ....i just wanted to point that out. still cool?
and of course fourth: remember that remark about you contradicing your self? there it is.....

drag racing and F1 is difrent than some uppie asshole crusing around in his ferari, i wasnt just refering to farari either, look at every new lux car out there they all have some type of sequental shifter on them(mabey not paddles but def somting) its totaly pointless because it;ll never get used for the life of the car, it IS treny in the respect that a lot of auto makers are using automatic shifters thease days, and truthfully its just more of a gimick than anything else....so there

First off, who are YOU to be calling people names? That's totally disrespectful... and won't go unnoticed.
I think what he meant was that Ferraris have become MORE of a status symbol than that of being noted for it's amazing performance and engineering. And I totally agree with that. Unfortuneatly there are a lot of rich idiots out there driving Formula 1 Ferraris who can't even appreciate it from an engineering perspective.. and YEAH that annoys the hell outta me too.
Homework on ClubHonda?! LMAO Come on.. we're here to chill and have fun.. Name-calling over an exchange of opinoins?! What does that say about you?? Think about it.
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR> and i'm sorry chris, i really like you, but i feel i must correct you. your car is in fact very little like the 911. 1998"T" or otherwise. for one very important reason: the 911 is (and i know you know this) rear engine, where as your's is a front mounted engine. this changes the hanling dynamics of the car dramaticly. in fact the only similarities i can find between the two are the engine layout (the flat configuration w/ turbo) and the drive layout (AWD) ....i just wanted to point that out. still cool? If you think about it... those two simliarities you just pointed out are the exact ones I'm talking about...
in fact VERY LITTLE ?? I'd say overly critical....
A tc'ed horizontally-opposed engine and AWD..I would call that the 'same idea'. I think you know what I meant.. I'm not exactly talking to a bunch of JET engineers, nor am I one myself..
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>and of course fourth: remember that remark about you contradicing your self? there it is..... [/quote]
Contradicting ?!!! I'm sorry but being able to see things from a different perspective and taking into consideration my reasoning and then commenting on it is RESPECTFUL. You made it sound like a bad thing, but by 'contradicting' himself I realize he's NOT an a$$ by thinking his opinion STANDS NO MATTER WHAT...
GEEZE....

Do any of you know what technology the new beamers are using in their tranis? I've heard rumor of 'paddle shifters' (like some of the Lexs have) but the Lex's have an AT and it's not true sequential... I'm wondering what BMW is up to.
Anywho, here's a pic of me and some guys 355F1.. I think we make a cute couple...
