View Full Version : MY FIRST RUN!!!

CSmooth999
11-03-2002, 11:13 AM
I went to Englishtown on Friday night and made my first runs w/ Scoobie!!!!!

I know even my best time isn't very good, but I'm still learning how to launch and drive... BUT HEY you GOTTA start SOMEWHERE!!!!

My best time was a 14.870 1/4mi :D (and I was totally pysched that I showed up my boss who thought I couldn't break 15)... which was a whole second faster than my first run (LOL), so at least I was improving. Launched at like 4500, it was sooooo sweet!!!

And Scoobie and I weigh 3218 lbs... I thought that scale was cool.. anywho

So how about some pointers?? My launch is horrible and my reaction time sucks. I think both of these will become better with a little bit of practice and maybe a shift light would help me find the best powerbands in each gear... things to think about...

I'm almost positive Scoobie is capable of running a 14.3, but the Subaru stats say 14.7, so likely a 14.8 isn't too bad for my first time out there. And being the only girl was a TAD intimidating...

Oh my god, I 'raced' a supercharged stang which had a total hottie driving it (looking over at the line HELLO baby!!) AND I got my ASS handed to me.. (he ran a 13.2) but we had a nice lil' conversation afterwards, I HAD to check out THAT engine.. and he let me sit in his car.. whoo hooo!!!

to improve your reaction time, concentrate on the light, when running the sportsman tree, have the clutch "loaded" e-brake pulled, revs up when you light up the second bulb, and then when you see the last yellow light, go! it will be green quickly, sounds like a good run, but the reaction time doesnt affect the et. but it will help ya win races. did i mention i finally cut a 441 light on the pro tree at pomona? i have been working hard on getting the light down, and it seems to be working, now we just need to get the new engine management system in...

yeah, getting the r/t down just takes experience, but the sportsman tree helps, we get to see the yellow lights go one by one instead of all at once.

its funny because if the started doesnt know me, they screw up and give me the slow tree, i see the first light and im gone and everyone thinks i redlighted, oh well, i also learned with the pro tree, when both cars are staged, the started has three seconds to start the tree, so if you knowe your starter and pay attention to their technique, you can cut that light good, i had both lights lit, and went one two, and launched!

racing at intersections help a lot because while your waiting at your light, you can watch the othersides traffic light go red and then yours will go green pretty soon after. at least thats how it is in NYC. if you get caught stuck in an intersection its like a $500+ fine. ouch. btw good run chris wish i could of seen the smile on your face after your 14.8 :D.

FYI

For any of you who think you're better or faster than 9seccivic, why don't you take it to the track to see who's a$$ is handed to who....

9SecCivic happens to be a VERY good friend of mine, so don't diss him again... or else....

Thanks for the support and advice guys...

Hey 9seccivic... question... there are two different types of trees? I'm confused? One is slower than the other? Explaination please!

Another question, how much boost is my turbo pushing stock? Got into a stupid argument over this, so hopefully you've got the correct data on this one.... and hopefully I was right.. lol.

You suggested using the e-brake... what's the best way to launch using this technique and at what RPMs do you suggest? My buddy says he's running 14.0s launching at 6g's... but he's got a cat-back... does a cat-back even do anything for the car? I would ASSUME it would increase low-end torque... ??? maybe??

9seccivic
11-06-2002, 05:52 PM
lesse, the sportsman tree or the "slow tree is used for et brackets, time trials etc. never used in the pro classes, you get all the yellow lights one by one, wheras the pro tree once you stage, all the yellow go at once and then green and if you see the green light you were sleepin...let me get the info on the boost.. one min

9seccivic
11-06-2002, 05:55 PM
i cant find the boost right now, but the cat back usually drops low end torque, and gains horsepower in the higher rpms. this isnt always true, but in most cases it is, when your downpipe and exhaust comes in you will be pleased, it offers torue throughout the power band, thats why its takin so long, they are perfecting it, without making it too loud!

HPinXS
11-06-2002, 10:08 PM
IF you're asking about the WRX's boost its anywhere between 13-15 psi between 3000 and 5000 rpm, above 5000 it drops till it is 7 psi at 7000 rpms.As far as losing or gaining bottom end torque, by changing the exhaust behind the converter, I highly doubt it, the stock and most after market high flow converters are resticive enough that the engine will not see the pipe diameter increase. The engine is at its highest volumetric efficency at peak torque, after that it is going down hill, all exhaust systems that pick up peak horsepower do so because they reduce the pumping losses that the engine has to overcome at high rpm,ie stock quite muffler builds back pressure that the engine now has to push out, rather than it flowing out under its own kinetic energy. The pipe from the turbo to the converter will also have very little effect on where and how hard the turbo spools to peak boost, unless the turbo is mis matched to its application IE turbo too large for intended usage or the fuel map is so far off that it shows a difference, I have posted an answer to this before as to more of the hows and whys. All of the exhaust system before the turbo is the most important, the diameters and lengths of the tubing before the collectors sets the rpm at which peak torque occurs, the trick here with a turbo is to make sure that the maximum heat energy is retained till it reaches the turbo and can be used to spin the turbine, in the Indy cars we used stainless steel at first which held heat pretty well then went to titanium which worked even better, and now we use inconel which loses even less heat and can be made even thinner(lighter),but is a real pain to work with, all the pipes start out as a paper thin flat sheet and are formed to tubes and bends, an exhaust system right now costs us about $25,000 to make for one car!! In case you were wondering how much power we used to make when we were turbocharged, I'll give you this @ 1.5 liters (91ci) over 1200 hp at 16,000+ rpm on gasoline,on methanol we could go 1350 in qualifying trim, and would race with about 1000 there about ,dont ask how much boost,we'll just leave it at alot,ok somewhere over 2.5 bar(over 50 psi).Sorry I went rambling on, havent been here in awhile and just got carried away.

92HYBRID

I REALLY DONT KNOW HOW MANY TIMES THAT YOU HAVE BEEN DOWN THE TRACK BUT FIRST OF ALL IT'S A KNOWN
FACT THAT GIRLS HAVE A FASTER REACT TIME THAN MEN
BUT IT ORDER TO HELP YOU I NEED TO KNOW WHAT KINDA LIGHT YOU ARE RUNNING ON SECOND THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO KNOW YOUR CAR FEEL IT AND KNOW TO WATCH THAT TACH BUT OTHER THAN THAT SOUNDS LIKE YOU DID RELLY GOOD KEEP UP THE PRACTICE CAUSE IT MAKES PERFECTION
