I think for racing, for sport compacts there's gonna be more tires available for the 15's and 16's as far as racing compounds (cheaper too).
as far as which is the lightest, I still think it's kinda a toss-up. my 18" racing hart cp-10's with tires weigh the same as my 16" ford focus wheels with tires. the rims themselves might weigh different, but once you get the tires on, there's not that much difference.
but those volks you mentioned are super light, I was holding a 18" one at a shop with my pinky finger :) bling bling though, the 15's are like $400 each or something like that.

for drag, most racers go with a smaller rim. the smaller the rim, the lighter it is. a 15" would probably be the largest that you would want to go with. 14" and 13" are even better.
the te-37s are extremely light (the 15" weighs in at under 10lbs i believe) and forged which make them stronger. a good combination to have. but as mentioned before, they are expensive.

i thought that racers use smaller rims not neccesarily because they are lighter but because but because it takes less distance for a smaller rim to complete a full circle than a larger diameter rim, allowing the car to travel the same distance in a shorter period of time...

getting a smaller overall diameter would shorten the gear ratios, which on a track might give some advantages if you have the traction.

Like they said earlier..., for dragging, u'll want a smaller rim. It will be lighter. But someone mentioned about the smaller the rim, the less time it needs to complete a full circle. When u up the rim size, the sidewall of the rim just shortens. It doesn't make the tires overall diameter increase. That is unless u go something like 19's or 20's. For autocross, usually a 16 or a light 17 like the RH C2 EVO, because of the less sidewall. This by far increases the turning and handling of the vehicle. But u also take a little more weight. So..., give and take a lil'.
