 Another new guy here with a 97 Civic Ex, wondering what i should do about and engine swap, B16a, B18c, or H22a. What would be the best thing to do. And then after that what should i modify, like headers, pulleys, those sorts of things i'm not quite sure of either. Please give a second to help me out. Thanx.

cheapest is the b16, but i would go with the b18c1 and as far mods for it depends on what your big plans are for it. FI or all motor, and go from there.

well out of the vtec motors the b16 is the cheapest and easiest to find, or you can go ls motor or even b20 and later put a vtec head. depends on your wallet.but stay away from h22, motor is too heavy and will kill all the handling in the car, plus its alot more expensive swap.as far as upgrades good starters are intake exhaust and clutch.hope it goes good for you

i would never but a B16 on an EK civic. it'll just make it...like another SI but lighter... i say a B20Z block with a turbo :D

have you actually done the swap to say that it will kill handling? friend and i did the swap in a 96 civic DX. relocated the battery to the rear, took out A/C because usual temperature was about high 70's and didn't need them, stiffer suspension, carbon fiberhood, and a small stereo system in the back. and let me tell you this, it hauls ass, even in cornering. what, the H22 weights about 80lbs more than the B18C1? no problem. one you start having passengers, the weight distributions will vary a lot. thats all for now

the h22a swap works, however considerations for the suspension need to be made. it doesn't kill handling, but it does alter it. even a/c and power steering can be kept. however, it may take additional $$ for the install. unless of course, you're able to do all of this yourself.

well i had a h22 in my civic hatch and the car was front heavy. ive never done it in a coupe so maybe it is different. im only speaking from what ive seen, maybe i shouldve said it was on a hatch

I'm either thinking GSR or ITR. I pretty much converted my exterior to a 99-00 so when I get the motor people are automaticly thinking Si. Thats all I want, to Smoke the unexpecting. I say go with B18 even the lower LS and upper (VTEC) would be good. That way you can save on the swap and go Turbo.

Don't even bother with the B16. If your going for a swap you should try to get something no Civic can offer. (example = 1.8L VTEC). Especially since you have to get a new tranny and ECU. From what I hear, the EX tranny isn't strong enough. CIVIC'S TRANNY SUCK! I would say go b16 on a hatch or DX coupe but whats the point in a EX coupe. Just trade in your car for an Si. The only difference besides the engine is the Rear discs and suspension. And you know your going to modify the suspension anyway. Well, just a thought. LATER!

My opinion would be this:
b16: not worth wasting the money for little result
b18c: Perfect, lot of power on 1.8L and EASY to install
H221: Too much work, but it will pay off in power if you want to overcome obstacles. (i.e. Fitment and suspension)
b20/Vtec: A lot of work, but extremely worth the work, and money. Be different, and try and be original. It will be well worth the funds!
b18c5: Want to be reliable, here it is! A lot of money, and power, and will still get you serious respect on the streets.
Overall the b18c5 seems to be the easiest, most powerful, and respectable if you have the money. GOOD LUCK!
