what is the difference between a catback exhaust system and a regular exhaust?

there is really three main type of exhaust.
cat back: cat back exhaust replaces the factory piping from the catalyic converter back with bigger piping.
Rear Section: rear section exhaust is usually just the muffler along with the last section of piping, meaning from the cat to that section will be sock sizing then from the rear section on will be bigger piping
univeral exhaust: Univeral exhaust is the mufflers you see on ebay and stuff where all they do is cut ur old muffler off and re weld the new muffler on. No piping done at all.
No with all of these you can do custom fabrication but those are the main definitions that the manufactures use.

the cat-back is gonna make the most difference in power cuase it's replacing more piping with larger diameter piping. the cat-back and rear section are completely bolt on, while you'll have to have someone with a welder get a universal muffler on.
